Getting Rid of Pesky Warts

Warts can be unsightly and annoying but are unfortunately common. They are caused by a virus and will usually go away on their own in about 2 years, but there are some good over-the-counter treatments for those looking to speed up the process.

Salicylic acid products are great because they are easy to use and inexpensive. Used daily, they work to gently allow healthy new skin to come to the surface. We recommend 40% for cauliflower-like warts or warts on feet. For more sensitive skin, use 17%.

At-home cryotherapy is another option with less frequently needed treatment. You only need to treat once every 2 weeks but can be painful and cause blisters. Bear in mind some patients still find they need to use salicylic acid in between treatments.

For a home remedy, believe it or not, there is some evidence that duct tape can help! Soak your wart in warm water for 5 minutes and then apply duct tape to the area. Leave on for a few days, then remove overnight to let the skin breath and then repeat the process over again until the wart disappears.

If the wart is on the face, bleeding, painful or continues to persist after 3 months of treatment it’s best to see the doctor. To try any of these OTC treatments come by Kirk Pharmacy and we can get you set up with the best product!
