Blue Light and Eye Strain from Computer Screens And Electronics

People have been asking us about supplements  to protect eyes from blue light (Ocuvite Blue Light, Lutein Blue, etc). They are hearing claims that blue light from computers, tablets, and smartphones could cause eye damage. Blue light is everywhere… and people get much more blue light from the sun than from screens.

There is no solid proof yet that blue light from electronics causes eye damage, but it may disrupt sleep, or contribute to “digital eyestrain” with blurred vision, dry eyes, eye fatigue etc. Products such as Ocuvite Blue Light and Blue Guard have lutein and zeaxanthin, an isomer of lutein. Lutein Blue adds beta-carotene and zinc. There isn’t good evidence these products help sleep or protect against eyestrain yet.

Instead, try limiting devices before bed… and trying nighttime settings on your smart phone. During the day we recommend the “20-20-20” rule to minimize eyestrain… shifting eyes’ focus every 20 minutes, to something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. For dry eyes, try blinking more frequently or artificial tears.

Keep in mind, if you are experiencing vision changes, light sensitivity, or pain, you must check with your physician immediately.
