Guide to Thermometers
Confused about which thermometer is best? Here are some helpful tips when choosing a thermometer:
- Digital thermometers are inexpensive and accurate, and most can be used in the mouth, rectally or under the arm
- Rectal temps are best for infants and young children since they are the most accurate
- Oral temps are a good option for kids age 4 and over
- Under arm temps are the least accurate
- Ear (tympanic) thermometers are quick and accurate, but cannot be used for an infant under 6 months of age, or for a child with an ear infection. Note the position of the thermometer in the ear canal is important to get an accurate reading.
- “No touch” thermometers are the least invasive, and quick and easy to use, but tend to be more expensive and can be prone to user error, so follow the instructions closely
- Pacifier thermometers may be tried for infants 3 months and older if other options aren’t practical. But they must be kept in the mouth for up to 6 minutes to get the most accurate reading.
- Wearable thermometers and color-change strips aren’t reliable, steer clear of them.
