Kirk Market COVID-19 Policy – Our Team Members

Yesterday, we released the news that 3 of our team members had tested positive for COVID-19.

We took the responsibility to inform the public because we looked at the writing on the wall, not metaphorically but literally.

Inside of our store, on the wall near the checkouts, we publicly display the 7 Guiding Principals of our Kirk Market Manifesto.

Guiding Principle #6 on that wall says, “We Care About Our People.” It is our promise to our team members, and we stand by it.

We were moved by the outpouring of support and concern for our affected team members and would like to take the opportunity to let you know how we are supporting them.

Any Kirk Market Employee excluded from work due to a COVID-related absence will be entitled to:

  • Full Pay.
  • A temporary charge account for FREE prepared meals, groceries, and prioritized home-delivery for their household.
  • Additional COVID-19 Sick Leave.

We are proud of the hard work and sacrifice that our team members have made and continue to make every day.

They wear their uniforms proudly, and we stand by them because – WE CARE ABOUT OUR PEOPLE.

Confirmed COVID-19 Cases

Kirk Market wishes to advise the public that the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority has informed us that three (3) of our team members have tested positive for COVID-19. Meticulous contact tracing has been carried out to track down every colleague who has been in sustained or adjacent contact with the affected team-members. All close-contacts have been tested and excluded from work while we await their results from the HSA as they continue testing of all frontline workers throughout the island.

The safety of our team members and customers remains our highest priority, regardless of the challenging times we now face. Please know that we are monitoring the COVID-19 situation very closely, while actively collaborating with the Health Services Authority and following all recommended guidelines.

UPDATE
What we’re doing

Kirk Market is committed to serving our community during this time when you need us the most. We’d like to let you know how we are responding to the Cayman Islands’ evolving coronavirus situation to protect our customers and our team members.

What is Kirk Market doing to keep guests and team members safe in-store?

We are taking guidance from the Cayman Islands Government and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), by enforcing regular cleaning as one of the most important preventative measures we can take. Our rigorous preventative and sanitizing procedures include:

  • Providing team members with disposable face masks and gloves to wear at work.
  • Scheduled breaks for hand washing.
  • Enforcing social distancing and splitting work schedules to minimize employee contact on the floor and in our offices.
  • Many of our office-based employees have transitioned to work-from-home environments with no disruption to service levels.
  • Having team members stationed at our store entrance to ensure carts are clean and available in an orderly fashion.
  • Closing alternate checkout lanes to allow for checkout lines to be more spread out. This helps provide room for social distancing.
  • Cleaning checkout lanes after each guest transaction.
  • Checkout lane 14 is now dedicated to senior citizens over 60 and expectant mothers.
  • Food sampling and demos are suspended until further notice.
  • Plexiglass partitions installed at checkout lanes and at Kirk Pharmacy.
  • Adding payroll hours to support more rigorous cleaning routines.

We are encouraging customers to observe social distancing and remain SIX FEET APART while entering and shopping in our store through the following measures:

  • Customers will be required to have their hands sprayed with an alcohol-based sanitizer by one of our team members before entering our store.
  • Actively monitoring and, when needed, metering guest traffic to promote social distancing.
  • Posting signage around the store to remind customers and team members about practising social distancing.
  • Dedicating team members to ensure guests wait in line at an appropriate distance until they’re called to the register.
  • Announcing overhead audio messaging in our store to remind customers to social distance.
  • LIVE streaming views of our line outside the store to help customers plan their store visits.

We are evaluating the COVID-19 situation in real-time, consulting with outside health and food safety experts, and monitoring updates in guidance from the Cayman Islands Government and the Health Services Authority.

Suspending Self-Serve Food Bars

Out of an abundance of caution and concern due to the coronavirus, on Monday 16th March, we are reducing the Prepared Foods Services within our store as part of our preventative and food safety measures.

We have temporarily suspended our:

  • Hot Bar
  • Salad Bar
  • Made-to-order Sandwich Station

Our full-service Mediterranean Bar will continue to offer hot and chilled food options from an adjusted menu.

For your convenience, we will still provide a variety of pre-made and packaged options in our grab-and-go coolers. Whether it’s over-night oats, fresh salads or tasty sandwiches… you’re still sure to find something to hit the spot.

This temporary measure will give us added control over our food preparation and service, and will allow us to continue providing high-quality, delicious food to our customers.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Kirk Market’s store hours will be 7:00am – 8:00pm, Monday – Saturday.

Why are we doing this?
Due to concerns surrounding coronavirus, these adjusted hours will give our store teams time to conduct additional preventive sanitation and will allow us time to restock product on our shelves.

The health and well being of our customers and staff is our top priority. It is important to note that in addition to being diligent about safeguarding environmental and physical health and hygiene, Kirk Market also cares about the mental well-being of our valuable staff who have been under tremendous pressure during this extraordinary consumer demand.

Allowing our team the necessary time to do a thorough job at work, and giving them balance to rest and dedicate time to their families means that we will be able to serve our community better.

We pride ourselves on our quality of service, and this decision will allow our customers to have a clean and happy store experience.
